How to apply for licensure:

Once all required documentation has been received, applications are usually approved within days.

eLicense Transaction Fee: Effective July 20, 2017, an eLicense System Transaction Fee of $3.50 is charged to all license transactions that result in the issuance, renewal, or reinstatement of a license or registration served by the eLicense Ohio portal. The revenue generated from this eLicense System Transaction Fee is paid to the State of Ohio and supports the operational and maintenance costs of the eLicense Ohio portal. Licensing boards do not receive revenue from this eLicense System Transaction Fee. This fee is nonrefundable and is charged in accordance with ORC 125.18(E) as amended by Am. Sub. HB 49 and temporary law Sec. 207.40 of Am. Sub. HB 49.

Individual applications:

Architects, Landscape Architects, and candidates for initial licensure by Examination must apply via the online portal at Choose "Login/Create Your Account" to begin the application process.

Architecture and Landscape Architecture Firms, or Firms with a Change of Name must also download, complete and attach the "Firm Ownership Spreadsheet" below and submit with their online application. 100% of the firm's ownership must be accounted for along with the name of the firm's Ohio architect or landscape architect in responsible control.

Prior to submitting a firm application, please review the Firm Certificate of Authorization Requirements and ensure that your firm meets each of them, including being registered as a domestic or foreign business entity with the Ohio Secretary of State.

Forms for Retiring Architects or Landscape Architects

  • Emeritus Architect or Emeritus Landscape Architect Application - If you are over the age of 65 and wish to retire from the practice of architecture of landscape architecture, you may apply with the Board for emeritus status. You must have been licensed for at least the past 10 years and be in good standing to qualify. The emeritus status allows retired architects or landscape architects without an active license to refer to themselves as "emeritus architect" or "emeritus landscape architect" without violating Ohio's Title Law. There is no fee for this form.

  • Architect Experience Program (AXP, formerly IDP) Fee Reimbursement Application When applying for reimbursement, proof of current enrollment and of the NCARB Council Record must be included. See instructions attached to the application. 
  • ARE Accommodation Request Form The Ohio Architects Board works with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) in ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Candidates for NCARB's Architect Registration Examination (ARE) may request a reasonable testing accommodation due to an ADA-recognized disability by applying first with the Board. Approved requests will then be forwarded to NCARB for review and processing. You must receive notice of approval of your accommodation request prior to scheduling your examination.
